Patron saints (Santi Patroni)

Are chosen as special protectors or guardians over areas of life. These areas can include occupations, illnesses, churches, countries, causes -- anything that is important to us. The earliest records show that people and churches were named after apostles and martyrs as early as the fourth century.

Recently, the popes have named patron saints but patrons can be chosen by other individuals or groups as well. Patron saints are often chosen today because an interest, talent, or event in their lives overlaps with the special area. Angels can also be named as patron saints. A patron saint can help us when we follow the example of that saint's life and when we ask for that saint's intercessory prayers to God.

For example,
Francis of Assisi loved nature and so he is patron of ecologists. Francis de Sales was a writer and so he is patron of journalists and writers. Clare of Assisi was named patron of television because one Christmas when she was too ill to leave her bed she saw and heard Christmas Mass. -- even though it was taking place miles away. Saint Rita ; patron of those in desperate situations, parenthood, and against infertility, also known as the patron saint of desperate causes, particularly matrimonial difficulties.

Prayer to Saint Rocco
Preghiera a San Rocco

O Great St. Rocco, deliver us, we beseech you, from contagious diseases, and the contagion of sin. Obtain, for us, a purity of heart which will assist us to make good use of health, and to bear sufferings with patience. Teach us to follow your example in the practice of penance and charity, so that we may, one day enjoy the happiness of being with Christ, Our Savior, in Heaven.
Amen

.

Amen.

O Blessed Saint Rocco,
Patron of the sick, Have pity on those
Who lie upon a bed of suffering.

Your power was so great When you were in this world,
That by the sign of the Cross, Many were healed of their diseases.

Now that you are in heaven,
Your power is not less.
Offer, then, to God Our sighs and tears
And obtain for us that health we seek
Through Christ our Lord
.

(Repeat the following 3 times)
Saint Rocco, pray for us,
That we may be preserved From all diseases of body and soul.

Amen.

November 2nd : All Souls’ Day

This is a month in which we commemorate the faithful departed. This year, All Souls’ Day falls on Sunday. We will celebrate the first day of the All Souls Day novena on Sunday, November 2nd.
The Sunday Masses will commemorate the dead
and we will have a chance to hear some of the traditional sacred music of the Roman Liturgy, including the most famous sequence, the Dies Irae, which speaks about the drama of death and judgments, sin and grace and ends, where all prayer ends: in confidence in the mercy of God embodied by our Savior, Jesus – Pie Jesu, Domine, dona eis requiem (O good Jesus, Lord, grant them rest/peace).
Also,
please remember to practice the responsory for the faithful departed, especially with your children, so they will know how to pray this prayer at wakes and funerals:

V. Eternal rest, grant unto him/her O Lord
R. and let perpetual light shine upon him/her.

V. May s/he rest in peace.
R. Amen.

V. May his/her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
R. Amen.
